Chappell Named to Johnny Unitas Award Watch List

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior quarterback Ben Chappell has been named to the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, sponsored by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Foundation.
The award, which is presented annually to the top senior quarterback in the country, acknowledges performance on the field, as well as character, citizenship, integrity and those who honor the game.
Chappell enters 2010 in the top 10 on the school's career lists for completion percentage (.599 - 1st), passing yardage (3,956 - 8th), completions (349 - 7th), attempts (583 - 8th), passing touchdowns (21 - 9th), total offense (4,022 - 10th), 300-yard games (three - 3rd) and 200-yard games (nine - 6th).
He finished 2009 completing 268-of-428 passes (62.6 percent) for 2,941 yards with 17 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 126.44 efficiency rating. The Bloomington South graduate became the first QB in IU history to complete over 60 percent of passes in a single season and ended the year in the Hoosiers' single-season top 10 in passing yardage (2nd), passing touchdowns (T-3rd), completions (1st), attempts (2nd), completion percentage (1st) and total offense (2,932 - 4th).
In Big Ten games only, Chappell led the league in passing yards per game (261.2) and attempts (303) and placed second in passing touchdowns (14), third in completions (183), total offense per game (261.5) and completion percentage (60.4). He ranked second in the Big Ten (overall games) in completions, third in passing yards per game (245.1), completion percentage and attempts, and fourth in total offense each time out (244.1)
A team captain in 2009, Chappell received honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition from the league's coaches following his junior campaign. He also shared Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors (Oct. 18), earned Academic All-District V honors and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
