BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Week three of preseason camp began with a single practice on Monday morning. The Hoosiers will practice twice on Tuesday and Thursday and once on Wednesday and Friday.
Following today's practice IUHoosiers.com's Jeremy Gray caught up with co-defensive coordinator Mike Ekeler and linebacker Chase Hoobler.
Ekeler is in his second season as Indiana's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He guided middle linebacker Jeff Thomas to honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition as Thomas led the team with 80 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss in 2011.
Hoobler earned a spot on the Yahoo Sports and BTN.com Big Ten All-Freshman teams a season ago. He appeared in all 12 games and started eight times at strong-side linebacker and tallied 48 tackles, 23 solo, two sacks, five tackles for loss and one forced fumble.
The program also welcomed former Hoosier Doug Crusan (1965-67) to practice. One of four All-America selections in 1967, Crusan became the first defensive lineman in IU history to be so recognized when he earned second team honors. That same year he helped lead the Hoosiers to the Big Ten championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
A product of Monessen, Pa., Crusan began his career playing on the offensive side of the ball, but was switched to defense prior to his senior season. During his only season playing on defense, the Hoosier captain totaled 76 tackles, including three tackles for loss, two passes broken up and three fumble recoveries.
Following his final campaign, Crusan was selected to play in both the Senior Bowl and the All-American Bowl. He followed that up by becoming the second of two first-round draft selections by the Miami Dolphins in 1968, along with their top pick, Larry Csonka. Crusan played offensive tackle for the Dolphins from 1968-74 and was a member of Miami's Super Bowl VII and VIII championship teams. In 1972, he played for the only undefeated team in NFL history.
