BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Fifth-year senior linebacker Leon Beckum suffered a knee injury in the season opener that sidelined him seven weeks. Since his return, Beckum leads the Hoosiers with his 21 tackles and 14 solos.

Beckum sat down with for a quick Q&A:

Coming off an injury, any kind of new perspective sitting on the sidelines?
"I take everything into consideration and just how to play harder. I see other people playing and it just makes me want to play harder."

Being from Bloomington, what's it like to play at Indiana?
"It was an easy choice. My education was paid for (21st Century Scholarship) so, I just decided to walk-on to the football team and God blessed me to be on the team.

Talk about the feeling of going from a walk-on to a captain to start your senior season:
"I tell a lot of people that I went from rags to riches. It was a lot of hard work, but I'm glad I'm at the spot I'm in right now."

What does the Old Oaken Bucket Game mean to you?
"It means a lot. I'm glad we got it and I want to keep it here."

Talk about your versatility. You've played all three linebacker positions. What kind of mentality does it take to do that?
"You just have to be mentally tough. I've been playing linebacker my whole life, ever since I was seven years old. They are all kind of the same, there's a little bit of a tweak, but they are all pretty much the same."

What's it like working with Coach Ekeler every day?
"I love it. He was a smart football player and he's a smart coach. I try to pick his brain and he tries to give me all of the information that he can. He hypes me up, so I love having him on the sidelines."

Talk about the balance of academics and playing, after earning Academic All-Big Ten the past few years:
"It's tough, but ever since I can remember, my dad always told me that I needed to get my education. I'm the only one in my immediate family that has been to college, so I feel like I'm putting all of my family on my back."

If you could go any where in the world, where would you go and why?
"I would probably end up going back to California. I went to California with Jeff Thomas over the summer and it was a great experience. I'd probably try to go there. California is a great place with great scenery."

If you could pick anyone to have dinner with, who would it be?
"It would probably be Ray Lewis, Jeff Thomas and Jerry Rice."
