Nov. 11, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior defensive end Jammie Kirlew has been added to the Watch List for the 2008 Ted Hendricks Award, awarded annually to the nation's top defensive end. The Watch List now includes 33 players, including six Big Ten defensive ends.
This list will be shortened to include five to six finalists in the final weeks of the season, and the final vote will be concluded on December 8. The 2008 Hendricks Award winner will be announced December 10.
Kirlew is sixth nationally and second in the Big Ten in sacks (10.5), and he is second nationally and leads the league in tackles for loss (18.5). In conference action only, Kirlew paces the Big Ten with 14 tackles for loss and is tied for the top spot with seven sacks.
For the sixth straight game, Kirlew recorded a sack with two against Wisconsin, his third multi-sack game of the season and the fourth of his career. His team- and career-high 10.5 sacks are good for fourth place on IU's single-season list, and his 16.5 career sacks are a half-sack behind Joe Huff for fifth place on the school's career chart.
Kirlew leads the team with his 18.5 tackles for loss this year, which is fifth on the Hoosiers' single-season list, and he moved into fifth place on the school's career chart with 36 in his career. The Orlando native currently sits second on the Hoosiers with 58 total tackles and paces the team with 45 solos on the year.
