BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University has been selected to play in the Insight Bowl, IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan and Insight Bowl Chairman Dick Stemple announced on Sunday evening. The Hoosiers (7-5, 3-5 Big Ten) will face Oklahoma State (6-6, 4-4 Big 12) on Monday, Dec. 31.

IU will be making its ninth bowl appearance and its first since the 1993 Independence Bowl. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MST/6 p.m. EST in Tempe, Ariz. The game will be played at Sun Devil Stadium (56,000) and will air on the NFL Network.

"I was delighted to learn that our football team has been selected to play in the Insight Bowl," Indiana University President Michael McRobbie said. "Coach Lynch and our players persevered through a season of unique challenges and, with strong support from our fans, achieved their goal to `play 13.' As we strive for excellence in all things at IU, this achievement is a point of significant pride for all of us."

    Greenspan echoed McRobbie sentiments.

"We are honored and pleased to have the opportunity to represent Indiana University and the Big Ten Conference at the Insight Bowl," Greenspan said. "We are so proud of the efforts of our coaches and student-athletes. Their courage and determination in the face of tremendous adversity is an inspiration to all. I know our students, faculty and staff, alumni and friends are very excited to visit Tempe and we look forward to competing with Oklahoma State University on this very special occasion of our 13th game."

Bill Lynch, who is the first head coach in program history to reach a bowl game in his debut season, is looking forward to the opportunity.

"I am happy for our kids and everyone associated with our program," Lynch said. "Our fans have waited a long time for this and I know Hoosier Nation will make its presence felt in Tempe. We are looking forward to spending New Year's Eve in some warm weather against a very talented Oklahoma State team."

This is the 19th annual Insight Bowl and the city of Tempe is excited for the Hoosiers visit.

"We are happy to be a part of Indiana's first bowl game since 1993," Stemple said. "We are excited to realize Coach Hep and Jane's dreams come true. For us to be a part of the Indiana story is so special. I cannot wait for us to get to share it with everyone; it is going to be terrific."

Bowl game tickets will go on sale at 8:30 p.m. this evening and may be ordered by calling the IU Athletics Ticket Office toll-free at 1-866-IUSPORTS (1-866-487-7678) or locally at 812-855-4006. As is the case when any Indiana team participates in post-season play, tickets will be assigned according to the Indiana University Ticket Priority Policy. We anticipate an ample number of game tickets will be available, but nonetheless we want fans to know that they are encouraged to order their tickets as quickly as possible. The priority seating order deadline will be Saturday, Dec. 15.

Through the Indiana athletic department's partnership with its official travel agency, Anthony Travel, fans will be able to either call a toll-free number (800-736-6377) or go online to personally arrange their travel and accommodations. Anthony Travel will work with each IU supporter to individually plan and execute their customized bowl travel plan that fits their needs - whether they are traveling from a local destination or anywhere else in the country.

Indiana does have some history with the bowl game. The Hoosiers recorded the lone shutout in the bowl's history on Dec. 31, 1991, blanking Baylor by a score of 24-0 when the game was known as the Copper Bowl. IU is 3-5 overall in its eight bowl appearances.

The Hoosiers and Cowboys have only met once. On Oct. 11, 1930, the teams battled to a 7-7 deadlock in Bloomington. Indiana holds a 23-19-6 (.542) overall record against the Big 12 Conference, including a 20-10 victory in its last Big 12 battle against Missouri on Sept. 26, 1992.
