Dec. 5, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior safety Mark Murphy earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I football first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Murphy is just the ninth Hoosier (11th time) to collect the honor and is the second in as many seasons - defensive tackle Adam Replogle.
Murphy, a two-time Capital One Academic All-District V selection, is an informatics major with a 3.91 grade point average. He will be named Academic All-Big Ten for the second straight year this month. In 2012, he received Indiana's Academic Excellence Award.
On the field, Murphy leads the Hoosiers with 230 tackles and 144 solo stops in his career. The Akron, Ohio, native finished second on the team with 84 tackles, 51 solo, to go along with one interception and one forced fumble in 2013.
Murphy carded three double-digit tackle games and has seven in his career. He made 12 stops and forced a fumble against Minnesota, posted 11 tackles at Michigan State and tallied 10 stops in the program's first win over Penn State.
