Indiana Finishes Sixth at Big Ten Match Play Championship
Feb. 15, 2014
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Indiana men's golf team went 1-0-1 on the second day of the Big Ten match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla., at The Concession Golf Club. The Hoosiers defeated Ohio State, 3-2, in the morning match and then tied Minnesota in the fifth place match. The Gophers were awarded fifth place by virtue of the tiebreaker, which was the most holes won as a team.
In the morning match, four of the five matches came down to the final hole, similar to the day before for Indiana. This time, the Hoosiers pulled out two wins on the final hole - by Max Kollin and Keegan Vea - while Will Seger won 4&3 to give Indiana the 3-2 win.
"We got off to a strong start and put the pressure on Ohio State early," Indiana head coach Mike Mayersaid. "We let them back in it over the middle part of the round but put together enough putts down the stretch to hang on for the win."
The victory advanced the Hoosiers to the fifth place match, where they would take on Minnesota. And just like the morning match, Indiana took four of the matches down to the final hole. Once again, the Hoosiers won two of the matches - Kollin and Seger - on the final hole and lost one while the fourth (Mills) was halved. The score showed a 2-2-1 tie between the two teams, but when the tiebreaker was invoked - most holes won as a team - it was Minnesota that was awarded fifth place.
"We spent a lot of energy in the morning match to hang on and win, so I don't think we had as much left in the tank for this match," Mayer said. "Minnesota is a very good team and we kind of got behind in the middle of the match. We tried to come back and Mills had a chance on the final hole but came up just short."
Indiana finishes the match play tournament with a 2-1-1 record and will return to the links Feb. 24-25 at the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz.
