Feb. 22, 2011
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team, fueled by an even-par 288 in the final round, captured the 2011 Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate title on Tuesday at the Wexford Plantation GC. Brant Peaper grabbed medalist honors with a 2-under 70 (72-71-70---213) to win by seven strokes.
The championship marks the third consecutive stoke-play tournament title for the Hoosiers. Each of the five Indiana players finished the event in the top-15 as the Hoosiers won by 12 shots over runner-up William & Mary.
"We came out determined today and played really well on a difficult golf course," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "We got off to a really good start yesterday and had a little bit of a letdown in the afternoon, but it's great to come out today and get the job done."
Peaper blistered the field, finishing the tournament 3-under and posting a tournament-high 13 birdies during the event. After a pair of previous top-five finishes, this marks the first individual win for the Tequesta, Fla. native.
"I'm really pleased with Brant Peaper," said Mayer. "He's been knocking on the door and he got it done in a big way."
Chase Wright continued his solid play, posting a final round 73 (73-75-73---221) to finish tied for fourth. Fellow junior David Erdy was the third Hoosier in the top-10, firing an even-par 72 (73-78-72---223) to place eighth.
Freshman David Mills (71-80-73---224) recorded the fourth top-25 finish of his young career, notching a tie for 14th. Corey Ziedonis had a final round 74 (74-76-74---224) to also finish tied for 14th.
Hugo Menendez (85-82-84---251), competing as an individual, had an 84 on Tuesday.
The Hoosiers (No. 27 Golfweek-Sagarin/No. 34 Golfstat) will be out of action until the National Invitational Tournament on March 21-22 in Tucson, Ariz.
