IU Tallies Three Wins, Two Over Top-25 Teams
March 22, 2010
MARANA, Ariz. - The Indiana University men's golf team won three of four matches against high-quality competition at the 2010 Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship, including a pair of wins over top-25 teams.
Following a tough 3-2 defeat against top-seeded Stanford in the opening round, the Hoosiers rebounded big time by flipping the score in back-to-back 3-2 tallies over No. 22 TCU and No. 5 UCLA. Indiana then concluded their time in Arizona with a 4-1 victory over the home-state University of Arizona Wildcats.
"This was a nice win over Arizona, they play this course a lot," said Head Coach Mike Mayer. "The boys showed a lot of guts and determination out there today."
Sophomore Chase Wright completed his perfect weekend on Tuesday, picking up his fourth win in as many matches. Freshman Brant Peaper was also a winner against Arizona, earning a `W' on the 19th hole for second time in the tournament.
Indiana's win over the Horned Frogs was dramatic to say the least as two of the matches could not be decided in 18 holes. Peaper took care of his match on the 19th hole while senior Alex Martin sealed the deal when he out-lasted Johan de Beer and won on the 20th hole.
The top of the IU line-up flexed it's muscle in the triumph over UCLA. Martin, David Erdy and Wright each picked up individual wins over the Bruins to give the Hoosiers another team victory. Martin was dominant in his contest, erasing Alex Shi Yup Kim, 6&5.
"After a really disappointing loss, but great effort to knock off Stanford, it was great to come back and beat two high quality teams," said Coach Mayer after Indiana's wins over No. 5 UCLA and No. 22 TCU. "My hat goes off to these kids, they just keep battling."
