March 30, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a little over an hour of play, the weather did not cooperate and the final round of the adidas Hoosier Invitational was canceled Sunday morning at the IU Championship Golf Course. The scores reverted back to the first 36 holes, and the 17th-ranked Indiana men's golf team finished fourth in the 17-team field.
Eastern Kentucky won the event with a score of 582 (304-278), while Miami (Ohio) finished two shots under EKU at 584 (282-302).
Senior Santiago Quirarte led the individual leaderboard and finished second overall after shooting a 2-under 69 in the second round. Coupled with a 73 on the first 18, Quirarte ended the tournament even at 142 and picked up the best finish of his career, the fourth top five of his career and the fifth top 10 of his career.
Quirarte was a member of the Indiana Crimson team, which was made up of five individuals and did not count toward the team scores. The IU Crimson squad finished at 592 (295-297), which would have been good for fifth place.
Junior Drew Allenspach led the first-team Hoosiers in a three-way tie for sixth at 3-over-par 145 (75-70). Allenspach earned his best finish of the season, his second straight top 10 and his fifth top 25 in eight events.
Junior Jorge Campillo finished behind Allenspach and captured a tie for 12th at 147 (76-71). True freshman Ren Han shared 18th place at 148 (78-70) followed by sophomore Alex Martin and junior Seth Brandon. Martin tied for 30th place at 150 (77-73), while Brandon tied for 43rd at 152 (78-74).
Joining Quirarte on the Crimson team was fifth-year senior Tad Sacheck, who posted a 72-77 (149) to enter a tie for 22nd place. Junior Brandon Pike shared 36th place at 151 (78-73), while Eric Serch tied for 43rd with 152 (72-80).
True freshman Paul Park closed out the lineup at 156 (78-78) and tied for 67th place.
Eastern Kentucky's Jesse Massie topped the leaderboard at 3-under-par 139 (74-65), shooting 6-under-par 65 on the second 18, to secure medalist honors.
Up next, the Hoosiers hit the road for the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo. The two-day event begins on Monday, April 7, and wraps up on Tuesday, April 8.
