IU Captures NYX Hoosier Invitational Crown
April 7, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's golf team (No. 60 Golfstat/No. 53 Golfweek) brought home its third tournament title of the season with a five-stroke victory over Illinois State at the NYX Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course. The three titles this season are the most since the 2010-11 squad brought home the hardware four times.
The Hoosier Invitational has been played each of the past six seasons and the Hoosiers have come away victorious now in four of them.
"It is always great to defend home turf and win a college tournament," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "I say this a lot but these are tough to win. For the most part, we did a lot of positive things and were able to come away with the win."
Indiana shot a final round team score of 289, giving them a three-round total of 850 (-2). That team score is the lowest for Indiana since firing a 849 at the Firestone Invitational in the Fall of 2010.
Illinois State came in second at 855, Michigan was third at 865 and Miami (Ohio) was fourth with 867. The Indiana "B" team finished with a final round score of 290 to give them 881 (+29) and a sixth place finish.
Individually, IU's Andrew Fogg - playing on the Indiana "B" team - took home medalist honors after carding a 3-under par 68 in his final round to finish the tournament at 208 (-5), one stroke ahead of Tyler Gentilella (Illinois State) and David Mills (Indiana). For Fogg, it is his first career tournament win with his previous best tournament finish a T23 at Wolf Run earlier this year.
"To have an individual win the tournament doesn't happen often. We know Andrew Fogg can play, we are not surprised by that, but we are thrilled for him and how he played this weekend. When someone that isn't playing as part of the team is able to come through and win, it really shows our depth and the drive that these guys have."
In addition to Mills' 209 (70-66-73), Brant Peaper finished in eighth place with a overall score of 212 (70-69-73) and John Beringer finished with a 218 (71-71-76). Corey Ziedonis closed with a score of 220 (68-77-75) and Michael McGee rallied after a rough first two rounds to post a 68 and an overall score of 224 (80-76-68).
The Indiana "B" team was led by Fogg's first place finish and saw Sean Stone join him inside the top 10 with a score of 211 (68-76-67) for sixth place. Max Kollin finished with 229 (77-76-76) and Hugo Menendez carded a tournament score of 233 (79-75-79).
Indiana returns to the course April 20-21 at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind., hosted by Purdue University.
