Indiana Captures Third Straight Hoosier Invitational Title
April 10, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team (No. 34 Golfweek-Sagarin/No. 35 Golfstat) captured its third consecutive adidas Hoosier Invitational team title on Sunday, winning the event by a convincing 15-stroke margin over runner-up Cleveland State. The Hoosiers finished the tournament at even par 852 (279-283-290).
All five members of the team were among the top-30 finishers, including three in the top-5. The Indiana `B' team ended the tournament in fifth. Tyler Merkel of Ball State won the individual title after posting a 4-under 209 (71-68-70).
"I think we played really well in rounds one and two, which put ourselves in position to win this title." said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The final round was a little more difficult as the wind whipped up and conditions got pretty tough. It was a good solid group effort and it's something to build on."
David Erdy recorded the top finish among the Hoosiers, tying for second after posting a 3-under 210 (68-70-72). Erdy has notched three top-5 finishes in 2011.
Joining Erdy near the top of the leaderboard were Chase Wright (69-70-73 --- 212) and David Mills (69-71-72 --- 212) with both tying for fourth. Wright has finished in the top-10 in five of his last six events, while Mills has now registered three top-10 showings in his debut campaign.
"David Mills has been in a little bit of a freshman slump," said Mayer. "It was good to see him snap out of that a little bit and have a solid performance. We know what kind of players David Erdy and Chase Wright are. I knew they would be in the hunt at the end and walking down the last five or six fairways with David Erdy, he was close on every hole to making birdie. I know how bad he wants to win this title. I thought it was a strong performance by that trio."
Corey Ziedonis finished at 5-over 218 (73-72-73) to tie for 18th, marking his third top-25 performance of the season. Brant Peaper rounded out the Indiana `A' team lineup with a 9-over 222 (74-73-75) and tied for 29th.
The Hoosier `B' team was led by Kyle Perry, as the sophomore posted an even-par 213 (71-72-70) to tie for ninth. Michael McGee was two shots behind Perry, finishing at 2-over 215 (68-71-76), good for 13th place.
Ben Bellville tied for 29th after firing a 9-over 222 (70-75-77), while Hugo Menendez tied for 43rd with a 12-over 225 (72-74-79). John Beringer finished at 17-over 230 (77-76-77) for the tournament and ended in a tie for 63rd.
"The performance from the `B' team was great to see," said Mayer. "That's what we need from these kids. We need them to push those in front of them and push hard enough to earn a spot in the top-5. They finished fifth in this tournament and that's outstanding."
Indiana will be back in action at the Illini Spring Classic on April 16-17 in Urbana, Ill. at Stone Creek GC.
