SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The 2013-14 men's golf season got underway on Friday for Indiana at the Northern Intercollegiate, where the Hoosiers are the defending champions. After the first of three rounds to be played over three days, IU is in 11th place out of 15 teams after posting a team score of 306 (+18).

"We really need someone to post a low score tomorrow," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "All the teams at the top had a low round today, so we have to find one or two tomorrow to get back into it."

Mills started on the back nine and went out in 38 before finishing the final nine holes in even par with two birdies and two bogeys for a score of 74. Nicholas Grubnich's four-over par 76 was the next best score in the IU lineup, as finished with three birdies over his middle nine holes before a couple bogeys on the way in.

The other two scores that counted towards the team score were a pair of six-over par 78's from sophomore Max Kollin and freshman Will Seger, both playing in their first collegiate team event. Rounding out the IU lineup was Hugo Menendez with a nine-over par 81.

Playing as an individual in his first collegiate event, Andrew Havill with a seven-over par 79.

Houston finished the first round with the team lead, posting a team score of nine-under par 279, two strokes better than Liberty. The best round of the day was registered by Blair Hamilton (Houston) and David Snyder (Kentucky) at five-under par 67.

The Hoosiers will be back on the course at 9:45 a.m. ET for round two. Live scoring can be found online at
