Hoosiers Rally for Third Place Finish at Northern Intercollegiate
Sept. 11, 2011
SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team moved up the leaderboard on day two of the Northern Intercollegiate to post a third place finish after an 11-over par 295 in the final round at Rich Harvest Farms. The Hoosiers recorded a 36-over 888 (293-300-295) for the tournament, finishing behind UCF (870) and Tulsa (880) in the 16 team field.
"In our first tournament out of the gate we beat a lot of good teams, including defending Big Ten champion Illinois, as well as Purdue," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "I don't think we played anywhere near our potential, and with that being said, we still managed to finish third. I've got to be happy finishing third when we didn't play our best."
Senior Chase Wright led the charge for the Hoosiers, firing a 3-under 68 in the final round to surge into a tie for sixth. Wright had four birdies and just one bogey in his last 18 holes, en route to three-round total of 3-over 216 (74-74-68).
"Chase had a great round today with a 68 on that golf course," said Mayer. "He had a great tournament after a rough opening stretch to begin the event."
Three other Hoosiers landed spots among the top-25, led by senior David Erdy's tie for 15th after an even-par 71 in the final round. Erdy ended the tournament with a 9-over 222 (73-78-71).
Junior John Beringer rounded out the Indiana lineup with a 254 (78-84-92) to tie for 94th.
Newcomer Andrew Fogg, competing as an individual, tied for 32nd in his first collegiate event after recording a 15-over 228 (72-76-80).
The Hoosiers will be back in action on September 16-18 at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
