Indiana Posts Solid Opening Round At Olympia Fields
Sept. 13, 2013
CHICAGO - The Indiana men's golf team opened the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Friday with a team score of 299, putting them in 12th place out of 15 teams. The top individual performance for the Hoosiers came from freshman Will Seger, who carded a 71 to put him in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard.
Although they did finish in 12th place, they are just five strokes out of fifth place in a very bunched up field after the first round.
"Will put together an outstanding round today, with the cool temperatures and the gusty winds, it really made scoring difficult out here," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "Even though we look at the scoreboard and see we are in 12th place, we also look to see that we are only a handful of shots out of the top five. So we know with a nice round tomorrow we will be right there until the end."
Seger, who started on the tenth tee, birdied three of his first four holes to get off to a hot start. After a couple bogey's over the middle of the round derailed his strong start, he closed with a birdie on his final hole to take some momentum into Saturday.
David Mills posted the next best score for IU with a 75, going out in just 1-over par but had an up-and-down second half of the round to finish at 5-over par for the round.
The Hoosiers will be back on the course at 10 a.m. ET for round two. Live scoring can be found online at golfstat.com.
