Martin Rallies for Top-10 Finish at PING/Golfweek Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Alex Martin climbed seven spots up the individual leaderboard after the final round of the PING/Golfweek Invitational on Monday, finishing in a tie for sixth place. As a team, the Hoosiers came in 15th with a 933 (319-301-313).
Martin ended his first round with a share of 40th place, but battled back during his last 36 holes to come up just one stroke shy of a top-five finish at the talent-laded event. The Middletown, Ohio, native began the tournament with a five-over 72. He then turned things around drastically with a sub-par 71, leaping up to 13th place with one round to go. On Monday, Martin remained hot and fired an even-par 72 to finish the competition at +4 (220) and in a tie for sixth place. He overcame a triple bogey by racking up six birdies on his final trip around the course.
Chase Wright has Indiana's next best scorer on the weekend, posting a 232 (82-74-76) which earned him a share of 51st place. David Erdy contributed three scores to the team total as well. He recorded scores of 79, 75 and 83 for a total of 237 and a share of 67th place.
Brant Peaper was consistent all weekend long, shooting scores of 81, 81 and 82. Making his collegiate debut, Andrew Frandsen rounded out the Hoosier line-up with a three-round total of 258 (84-86-88).
Indiana is back at it again next weekend, competing in the Windon Memorial Classic from Oct. 4-5 at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. The Hoosiers placed second at last season's event while Jorge Campillo took home medalist honors.
DAY ONE RECAP
The Indiana University men's golf team played 36 holes on Sunday at the PING/Golfweek Invitational, and are set to complete the tournament with the final round on Monday. Senior Alex Martin put himself into contention for a top-10 finish after firing a one-under 71 in his second round.
As a team, the Hoosiers will begin the final day in 15th place at 620 (319-301), improving 18 strokes in their second round. Martin's second round flurry was the story of the day for IU, elevating himself 27 spots into a tie for 13th place on the individual leaderboard. The Middletown, Ohio, native shot four holes under par, including an eagle on the 549-yard par-5 11th hole. Martin is just two strokes back from a large group tied for seventh place, and only three back from the top-five.
David Erdy was Indiana's next best scorer on Sunday. Erdy showed improvement as well in shooting a second round 75 after posting 79 in his opening round. His two round total of 154 has earned him a share of 50th place.
Chase Wright also made a large jump in his second trip around the course on Sunday. Wright trimmed eight strokes off his opening round 82 to post a 74 in round number two.
