Oct. 11, 2011
AKRON, Ohio - The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team fired a 6-under par 282 in the final round at Firestone Country Club en route to their second consecutive Firestone Invitational team title. The Hoosiers were named co-champions of the event, finishing with a 10-under 854 (289-283-282), along with St. Mary's (CA). Iowa State, SMU, and Ball State rounded out the top-5 among the 17-team field.
"It was a complete team effort from top to bottom and that's what it takes to win a college golf tournament," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer after recording the 21st title of his career. "We finished strong every round and I thought that was the key. It's great to get a team victory. We'll continue to build on this and get ready for the next tournament."
Senior Chase Wright continued his stellar play, finishing runner-up after a 3-under 69 in the final round. Wright was 7-under (72-68-69---209) for the tournament, four shots back of medalist Mac McClung of St. Mary's. Wright's 54-hole total of 209 is the second lowest of his Hoosier career and the top-5 finish is his eighth.
Wright was not the only Hoosier presence in the top-5, as sophomore David Mills tied his career-low round with a 5-under 67 (71-72-67---210) to finish tied for third. Mills' 210 was also his best 54-hole total and the finish marked the third top-5 showing of his young career.
Freshman Andrew Fogg finished with a 3-over 219 (73-70-76) for the tournament and tied for 30th, while junior Brant Peaper tied for 37th after posting a 4-over 220 (76-73-71). Junior Corey Ziedonis rounded out the Hoosier lineup with a 5-over 221 (73-73-75) to tie for 42nd.
Michael McGee, competing as an individual, finished tied for 77th after a total of 14-over 230 (76-82-72).
The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend at the Windon Memorial on October 16-17 at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
