Freshman Keegan Vea Paces Hoosiers On First Day of Pinetree Intercollegiate
Oct. 21, 2013
KENNESAW, Ga. - The Indiana men's golf team sits in fourth place out of 12 teams at the Pinetree Intercollegiate at Pinetree Country Club hosted by Kennesaw State University with a team score of 587, nine strokes behind first place Akron. Freshman Keegan Vea carded rounds of 70 and 74 on his way to a 144 total and a tie for fifth place individually.
Indiana posted a team score of 296 in the first round and then came back to cut five shots off of that total in round two and move up to fourth place. Each of the five players competing towards the team score for Indiana improved their score from round one to round two or had the same score in both rounds.
The 296 score in round one is the best first round team score so far this season for the Hoosiers. The same can be said for the 291 in round two.
In his first round, Vea's card showed one eagle, one birdie, one bogey and 15 pars on his way to 70. In round two, he once again eagled the 16th hole and went out in 2-under par but ran into trouble on his second nine holes with two bogeys and a double bogey. As it is, Vea is one of eight players in the tournament that are at Even par or better.
David Mills registered two rounds of 73 on the day but they were vastly different on the scorecard. In his first round, he was 2-over par after his first nine holes before carding a birdie and eight pars on his second nine. Then in round two, he eagled his second hole (No. 11) but also had four bogeys and a birdie to make the turn at 1-over par before shooting even par on his second nine. His total score of 146 puts him in a tie for 11th place individually.
Both Max Kollin and Will Seger finished the day tied for 24th place with scores of 149. Kollin struggled out of the gate in his first round but was able to find a total of three birdies and finish with a 78. His second round began much better, after starting with a bogey on his opening hole but then birdied the next and eagled No. 16 to make the turn in 2-under. He birdied his 14th hole but had a pair of bogeys the rest of the way in to finish with a round of 1-under par 71.
Seger opened his day going 3-over par for his first nine holes and then double bogeyed his tenth hole before logging birdies on three of the next five holes on his way to a 3-over par round of 75. He did one stroke better in round two, posting four birdies but also three bogeys and a double bogey.
Nicholas Grubnich rounds out the IU lineup sitting in a tie for 36th with a score of 151. After starting his day with a 6-over par 78, he posted a steady round of 1-over par 73 in round two to help the team.
Playing as an individual, freshman Andrew Havill stared his day with a 3-over par round of 75. He began his second round with a 2-over par first nine holes and then struggled coming in to finish with a 7-over par 79. His two round total score of 154 leaves him tied for 44th place individually.
The tournament will conclude with Tuesday's final round starting in the morning. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
