Indiana Closes Fall With Fifth Place Finish at Pinetree Intercollegiate
Oct. 22, 2013
KENNESAW, Ga. - The Indiana men's golf team posted a final round team score of 298 to finish the Pinetree Intercollegiate with a total score of 885 and a fifth place finish out of 12 teams, just three strokes out of third place.
We felt like after the second round we really had it going," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "We were solid throughout yesterday but we got off to a poor start today. We were able to come back and play OK, but we have to play better than that to compete out here against these teams.
The top individual finisher for Indiana was senior David Mills, who registered a finals round 74, giving him a total score of 220 and a tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard. It is Mills' fourth top 25 finish in five tournaments this fall.
Next it was a trio of Hoosiers that finished the tournament with a overall score of 224, Max Kollin (78-71-75), Nicholas Grubnich (78-73-73) and Keegan Vea (70-74-80). That score was good for a T20 finish, the best finish of the year for all three players.
Will Seger was the fifth player competing for the team and he closed with a 76 on Tuesday to put his overall score at 225 and a tie for 26th place on the individual list.
Andrew Havill, competing as an individual, finished with a total score of 235 and a tie for 51st individually.
"With this being our final tournament of the fall, we have the winter to work on things to get experience and improve areas that we struggled," Mayer said. "I know we will come back in the spring as a stronger team physically and we will build on the experiences that we gained in the fall to be ready for the Big Ten Match Play Championships."
The next tournament for the Hoosiers will be Feb. 14 at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Bradenton, Fla., at The Concession Golf Club.
