Strong Final Rounds Moves Indiana To Sixth Place Finish at Warrior-Wave
Nov. 7, 2012
PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii - The Indiana men's golf team (No. 41 Golfstat/No. 39 Golfweek) fired a final round 280 (-8) to finish the Warrior-Wave Intercollegiate in sixth place with a three-round total of 869 (+5). That team total is the second-best team total for the Hoosiers this season, trailing only a 858 at Wolf Run.
"After a mediocre first two rounds, it was good to finish with 8-under today," head coach Mike Mayer said. "It was a good way to finish the fall season and although we struggled overall our last couple times out, today will make the wait for the Spring season easier to handle."
Michale McGee matched his career-best round with a 5-under par 67 on Wednesday, giving him a overall score of 213 (-5) and 10th place individually in the tournament. In his final round, he started on the tenth hole and went out in 5-under par after recording an eagle on the 18th hole. He ended his round with six birdies and an eagle.
"Michael (McGee) played really well today and was just outstanding for all 18 holes," said Mayer. "And Corey Ziedonis really came around after struggling his last couple tournaments to post a nice 1-under round today and gain some confidence going into the spring."
Ziedonis posted four birdies and one bogey on his way to a 69 in the third round to give him an overall total of 220 (+4) and a tie for 26th place individually.
Brant Peaper carded a birdie and double bogey on his first nine holes before coming in with an eagle and a bogey, finishing at even-par 72 for his final round. His total score for the tournament was 221 (+5), tying him for 29th place.
Hugo Menendez also posted an even-par round of 72 on Wednesday with three birdies and three bogeys. His score for the tournament was 222 (+6) to put him in a tie for 35th place.
David Mills was not able to get any momentum going in his final round and finished with five bogeys and one birdie for a 4-over par 76. His total for the tournament was also 222 (+6) to tie for 35th place.
The next tournament for the Hoosiers will be the Big Ten Match Play Tournament, which takes place Feb. 8-9, 2013, at The Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, Fla.
