Spring Campaign Right Around the Corner
Jan. 22, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Looking out the window today you would not be able to tell, but the Indiana men's golf team kicks off its spring season in less than a month. The Hoosiers, who closed the fall season ranked in the top 25 in three polls, open the campaign in Point Vedra, Fla., at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 17-19.
The University of North Florida will host one of the top fields in college golf at Sawgrass Country Club. Sawgrass has hosted the PGA's PLAYERS Championship from 1977-81 and held the 1987 Mazda Senior PLAYERS Championship won by Gary Player. It has hosted the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational since 2001.
In six events and against one of the toughest schedules in school history, IU finished no worse than sixth place at any tournament this fall. After sharing fourth at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 15-16, the Hoosiers reeled off three straight third-place finishes against fields loaded with top-25 teams.
Juniors Jorge Campillo and Seth Brandon spearheaded the Hoosier attack. Campillo, who is ranked No. 38 nationally by Golfweek, led the team with a 72.00 average while playing in all six events. Brandon sits No. 81 in the country with a 72.56 average and also participated in six tournaments. Both golfers posted two top-five, three top-10 and five top-25 finishes.
Sophomore Alex Martin added a 73.56 average in 18 rounds with four top 25s. He is rated No. 191, while junior Drew Allenspach sits at No. 245. Allenspach made two trips in the top 25 and finished fourth on the club with a 73.73 scoring average in five events.
