Orlando, Fla. - The 19th-ranked Indiana men's golf team opened its first spring tournament with a 10th-place finish at the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate, snapping its string of three consecutive victories. IU shot 904 (297-304-303) at the 54-hole event hosted by Central Florida and the Rio Pinar Country Club.
"It was just one of those tournaments," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "We got off to a tough start and didn't get anything positive going. Today, we went in looking to improve on the mistakes we made yesterday, and we did that. Overall, we just didn't make the shots or putts when we needed to."
In addition, junior Jeff Overton had his streak of four victories in four events broken. Golfstat's number one golfer in the nation finished with 218 (70-73-75). The Evansville, Ind., native was the Hoosiers' highest finisher, tying for 12th place.
Overton opened the round with eight consecutive pars, but could not make a charge on the backside in his first action of the spring.
"I hit some bad shots," said Overton. "It was different playing outside. It was not physically tough, but mentally it was difficult. I just have to get over this tournament and come back strong at St. Croix."
Junior Mike Birkenfeld rebounded from a tough second round to post a 75. Birkenfeld closed with a three-day total of 231 (75-81-75).
Freshman David Butwell shot his third consecutive 76, matching junior Heath Peters score of 228 (76-75-77). The pair ended the event tied for 38th.
"My touch shots were off," said Peters. "Overall, my ball striking was good. It was tough, especially on the grass for the first time this season. This was a good learning experience."
Up next, Indiana heads to St. Croix, Virgin Islands, for the St. Croix Collegiate Classic. The event will be held on Friday-Sunday, March 5-7 at the Carambola Golf Club.
"We have to learn from this tournament," said Mayer. "We know what we need to work on, and we'll just move onto St. Croix, which is a much bigger event and correct them."
