Campillo Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week
Feb. 23, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana freshman men's golfer Jorge Campillo has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Feb. 23. Campillo is the first Hoosier to capture the award this season, the first since current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton (2002-05) won the honor on May 3, 2005, and the first freshman to earn the accolade since Santiago Quirarte on March 18, 2005.
"Jorge has worked very hard this semester and throughout his time here at Indiana University on all aspects of being a student-athlete," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "That work has paid off in many ways, including the honor awarded to him this week by the Big Ten. Jorge is an outstanding individual and is a pleasure to coach. His accomplishments so far are just the start of what is going to be an outstanding collegiate career as a Hoosier."
Campillo led the Hoosiers to a second-place showing at the Club de Golf Santa Anita/North Texas Classic in Guadalajara, Mexico on Feb. 19-20 following a runner-up finish, the best placing of his career. He appeared to have medalist honors in hand only to be thwarted by Houston's Pablo Acuan (72-70-68), who birdied five of his final six holes to not only defeat Campillo by one stroke but to lift the Cougars to the team championship.
The Caceres, Spain native closed with a sterling 4-under-par 68, matching his best round of the season (round two at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Sept. 24-25), and ended the tournament at 5-under 211. Campillo bounced back from an opening 74 with a 69 and his phenomenal final-round tally.
"Jorge had an outstanding tournament and really played some great golf," Mayer said. "He continues to get better and better with each outing, and I look for him to have a huge spring."
Campillo is the first Hoosier freshman to register a top-five finish since Quirarte placed fourth at the 2005 Pioneer Classic (March 15-16). He also grabbed the best finish for a freshman since Overton tied for second at the 2002 FirstEnergy Intercollegiate.
