St. Croix, Virgin Islands - Battling windy conditions and a difficult golf course, the Indiana men's golf team sits in first place after the first round of the St. Croix Collegiate Classic. The Hoosiers shot 290 and sit one stroke ahead of Xavier.

"Overall, I'm pleased with our effort after a shaky start," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "I'm proud with how the kids reacted to a difficult golf course after a difficult start. It was a windy and challenging day, and we demonstrated a lot of patience today."

Mike Birkenfeld led the team with a 2-under-par 70, his lowest round of the spring. The junior sits in third place, two shots behind leaders Ben Tuthill (Rhode Island) and Dax Murray (Oral Roberts).

Jeff Overton, the second-ranked golfer in the nation, carded a 1-under-par 71 in round one. The Evansville, Ind., native sat at 3-under-par before a double bogey at the par-three 14th hole en route to his 71. Overton is tied for fourth, three shots behind the leaders.

"Mike and Jeff both had it at 3-under-par at one point," said Mayer. "They kept it together and played well."

In his first action of the spring, sophomore Scott Seibert fired a 1-over-par 73, his second lowest score in six rounds this season (second round at the Xavier Invitational, 10/13).

Additionally, junior Heath Peters and senior Ryan Cassidy rounded out the Hoosier lineup with a pair of 76s. The duo is tied for 35th place heading into round two.

"After a tough start, Heath and Ryan fought back with respectable rounds," said Mayer.

Individually, freshman David Butwell finished with a 76 in his first tournament this spring.

The Hoosiers continue their quest for victory number four on the year, teeing off at 7 a.m. Saturday morning in round two.

"We put ourselves in position and that's what we always want to do after the first round," said Mayer. "If we play to our abilities the next two days and do what we need to do, we will be in good shape."
