Buckeye, Ariz. - The Indiana men's golf team sits in third place after two rounds at the 14-team Steve Kerr Invitational at Sundance Golf Club. IU sits 12 shots behind 24th-ranked Colorado State and six shots behind second place UTEP heading into Saturday's final round. The Hoosiers carded a two-round total of 587 (287-294).

"We played well, especially in the second round," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The one thing lacking was a player shooting under-par. To compete for a championship, we need at least one player under-par in every round."

Leading the way for the Hoosiers was Heath Peters. Feeding off the momentum from his final round 69 at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic on March 7, the junior is tied for fourth place after firing a 1-over-par 143 (72-71). The Garrett, Ind., product sits seven shots behind Dan Floyd of UTEP.

"Heath played a really good 36 holes of golf," said Mayer. "He really played solid golf. You have to take your hat off to him. He was really patient on the golf course. It was one of the best days of golf he has had in a long time."

Junior Jeff Overton finished with 146 on the heels of an opening round 72. The third-ranked golfer in the country is tied for 11th, looking for his sixth top 10 in seven events this season and the 17th top 10 of his career.

In addition to Overton, sophomore Scott Seibert is tied for 11th following rounds of 74 and 72. Seibert, competing as an individual, looks for his second career top 10 in the final round on Saturday.

Seeing his first action of the spring season, sophomore Brad Marek cameback from a 78 in round one with an even-par 71 in round two. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native is tied for 24th with his two-round score of 149.

"I'm really pleased with Brad Marek," said Mayer. His second round even-par was really a good round. It was great for Brad and big for the team."

Freshman David Butwell is the final Hoosier golfer in the top 30. Butwell shot 150 (77-73) and sits in a tie for 29th place.

Indiana makes a run at its fourth title of the season on Saturday in the final round of the Steve Kerr. Tee time is set for 7:30 a.m. MST.

"We can make up 12 shots if we play to our capabilities," said Mayer. "We need someone to go low, and we have a lot of guys who are capable of doing so."
