Lineup Announced for Boilermaker Invitational
April 3, 2006
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With four tournaments in four weeks, the Indiana men's golf team begins its drive for an NCAA Tournament berth at the Boilermaker Invitational. The tournament will be hosted by Purdue University on Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9, in West Lafayette, Ind.
Hoosier head coach Mike Mayer announced his lineup for the event, which features three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. It also is the same five golfers who finished third at the 17-team Pinehurst Intercollegiate (March 19-21) the last time Indiana stepped on a golf course.
In the No. 1 position, as he has been all season long, is freshman Jorge Campillo. The two-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week has played in all eight of the team's events and holds a team-leading 72.39 scoring average. Campillo is on pace to shatter current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton's freshman scoring record of 74.45 set back in 2001-02.
Playing in the second spot is sophomore Santiago Quirarte. A steady presence in the lineup the entire campaign, Quirarte also has appeared in all of the team's tournaments and is second on the team with a 73.17 average.
Staking claim to the third position is freshman Drew Allenspach. Allenspach netted the best finish of his career as he tied for 11th with 148 (71-77) at Pinehurst. The Sugar Land, Texas native is the third Hoosier to compete in every event in 2005-06, and he is third on the team with a 73.61 average.
Making his fifth straight appearance in the lineup and participating in his seventh event overall, freshman Seth Brandon nailed down the No. 4 spot. Brandon is fourth on the club with a 74.82 scoring average in 17 rounds.
Rounding out the lineup, senior Scott Seibert is appearing in his seventh straight tournament. The Chesterfield, Mo., native recorded his best finish of the season - a tie for 13th - in his last outing at Pinehurst. Seibert holds a 75.59 average (17 rounds), good for fifth on the team.
"We have a four-week stretch where we play four golf tournaments," Mayer said. "It is time for us to play solid each week to solidify an NCAA berth. Our freshmen are getting better and maturing each time out, and coupled with Santiago and Scott, we will be a factor the remainder of this season."
