April 3, 2012
MACOMB, Ill. - Junior Michael McGee fired a 5-under 67 in the final round of the Beu Mussato Invitational on Tuesday to earn medalist honors in the 54-hole event at Harry Mussato GC, finishing with a 4-under 212 (74-71-67). Freshman Nicholas Grubnich posted an even par 216 (71-70-75) to finish fourth.
"We put these guys in this tournament as individuals to give them an opportunity to show us what they have and they both came through with flying colors," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer.
McGee's blistering 67 in the final round tied for the lowest round of the tournament. The victory marks the first of McGee's Hoosier career.
"Michael McGee has been close and he's had a good, solid spring," said Mayer. "He's a player that we really think could help us. This is obviously a great boost in that direction. He really came through in the clutch."
Grubnich, competing in his first collegiate tournament, finished with a 3-over 75 in the final round to notch fourth place.
"Nick Grubnich put himself in position to win his first collegiate tournament," said Mayer. "We wanted to get him out there to play and we wanted to get him in tournament settings. He took advantage of his first opportunity. He's got some growing still to do, but he's going to be a big part of this program for the next three years."
