Hoosiers, Peters and Overton Finish Third at FirstEnergy
Akron, Ohio - The Indiana men's golf team tied for third place at the 17-team FirstEnergy Intercollegiate following a final round 297. IU's 54-hole total of 869 (282-290-297) matched Kent State and was eight shots behind the victorious Xavier Musketeers and six shots behind Toledo.
"Overall, we are a little disappointed," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "Xavier is an outstanding team, but we just didn't get the job done. We were standing on the 17th tee, an island green, with a legitimate chance to win the golf tournament. Unfortunately our balls found the water more often than the green. We'll regroup, take positives from this tournament and head to Michigan State next weekend."
Heath Peters and Jeff Overton provided the Hoosiers with a huge boost at the front of the lineup. For the second consecutive week, both juniors finished in the top 10.
Peters provided a strong final round, moving up from a tie for 21st into a tie for third place. The Garrett, Ind., native tamed Firestone Country Club's North Course with a final round 69, giving him a three-round total of 214 (71-74-69). Toledo's Brad Heaven captured individual honors at 206, while Mark Weghorst of Miami (Ohio) placed second with 212.
"This was a good, solid round and a good, solid overall tournament from Heath," said Mayer. "His round today in very tough conditions shows what promise this junior has."
With his third-place finish, Peters now has five top 10 finishes and two top 5 finishes this season and 13 top 10 and five top 5 finishes in his career. He has recorded top 10's in three of the last four tournaments he has played in, and his 214 total matched the lowest 54-hole total of his career (fifth time).
Jeff Overton entered the final round in second place with hopes of earning his fifth title of the season, but the junior carded a 75 in the final round. Despite the round, Overton joined Peters in third place with a three-round 214 (68-71-75).
The Evansville, Ind., native has recorded three straight top 5 finishes and four top 5 finishes in his last five events. Golfstat's sixth-ranked golfer in the nation now has eight top 5 finishes in 10 events this season to go along with 19 career top 10's and 14 career top 5's.
In addition to IU's top two golfers, Scott Seibert concluded a successful tournament. The sophomore fired a final round 75, finishing tied for 23rd at 221 (73-73-75).
"Scott had a very solid tournament. This is the kind of play we need from him the rest of the year for this team to succeed," said Mayer.
Rounding out the lineup. junior Mike Birkenfeld ended the tournament tied for 41st with 225 (70-75-80), and freshman David Butwell tied for 46th at 226 (76-72-78).
Sophomore Brad Marek, playing as an individual, closed the Intercollegiate tied for 71st after a three-round 233 total (81-75-77).
After its third-place finish, Indiana now has eight top 5's in 10 events this season and has secured a top 3 finish six times.
The Hoosiers return to action Friday-Saturday, May 1-2 at the Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational at the Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich.
