Campillo to Play in Second Straight Palmer Cup
May 2, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior men's golfer Jorge Campillo has been named to the European team for the 2008 Palmer Cup presented by Monster. The junior is making his second straight appearance on the European club, as he was a member of the 2007 team.
The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-27 on the 6,903 yard, par 71 Willie Park Junior designed Glasgow Golf Club Gailes Links when the top collegiate players from the United States tee off against their counterparts from Europe. Glasgow Golf Club was founded in 1787 and the Scotland course is the ninth-oldest golf club in the world.
Jonas Blixt of Florida State, Stirling's Scott Borrowman, Johnnie Caldwell of South Alabama, Campillo, Jonas Enander Hedin of Charlotte, Tennessee's Charlie Ford, Gareth Shaw of East Tennessee State and Southern California's Tim Sluiter comprise the European team. Blixt, Campillo and Shaw competed in last year's matches at Caves Valley. The European team - who will be coached by Mårten Olander of Sweden - has won the past two events in Europe but trails the series, 6-4-1.
Campillo, the Big Ten Golfer of the Year and 13th-ranked golfer in the country, became the eighth Hoosier to win a Big Ten championship doing so at Michigan State's Forest Akers West Course on April 25-27. He finished at 10-under par with a 3-under 69 in round one, 71s in rounds two and three, and a final-round 67, en route to a two-shot victory. Campillo has won three consecutive tournaments, a feat that has not been accomplished since Overton won four straight in the fall of 2003.
With his victory, Campillo earned a spot on the All-Championship team and won the Les Bolstad Award. The honor is presented to the Big Ten player with the lowest scoring average, and Campillo led the conference with a 71.61 mark.
Campillo joins PGA TOUR stars Overton and Shaun Micheel as the only golfers in IU history to win a Big Ten championship, Big Ten Golfer of the Year and the Les Bolstad Award. To go along with his three victories, Campillo has six top fives, seven top 10s and top 25s in 12 events this season.
