May 5, 2006
Competing in his ninth PGA Tournament event of the 2006 season, former Indiana men's golf two-time All-American Jeff Overton (2002-05) has had a successful start to his rookie season. This weekend, Overton is attempting to make his fourth straight cut at the Wachovia Championships at the Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte.
In his previous eight tournaments, the Evansville, Ind., native has made five cuts and corralled a pair of top-25 finishes. To open the season, Overton shared 24th place at the Sony Open in Hawaii (Jan. 12-15) behind a strong finish of 66 and 68 in the third and fourth rounds.
After playing in the Buick Invitational (Jan. 26-29) and AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am (Feb. 9-12), the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year bounced back at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson (Feb. 23-26), making the cut with a sterling 67 in round two and a 69 in round three en route to an 8-under-par 280 finish (71-67-69-73).
Missing the cut at the Honda Classic (March 9-12), Overton responded with three consecutive successes heading into the Wachovia. He claimed a tie for 66th at the BellSouth Classic (March 30-April 2) before earning his best finish on Tour when he tied for 19th at the Shell Houston Open (April 20-23) at 6-under 282 (71-69-69-73).
Last weekend, Overton netted the best 18 of his career, carding a second-round 65 to overtake the cutline at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans (April 27-30). He ended up sharing 47th place at the event with an 8-under-par 280 (73-65-71-71).
Overton also ranks 13th on the Tour, averaging 300.9 yards per drive.
Additionally, Overton has played one Nationwide Tour event with great results. He tied for 14th place at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open (March 23-26) at 4-under 280 (71-71-67-71).
