BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former IU golfers Alex Martin and Shaun Micheel will be two of the 156 players vying for a title at the 110th US Open, hosted by Pebble Beach from June 17-20. Martin captained the 2009-10 Hoosier golf team while earning his second consecutive All-Big Ten selection. Micheel, the 2003 PGA Champion, donned the Cream and Crimson from 1988-91.

This marks the second year in a row with Hoosier representation in the US Open playing field as then-19-year-old and current rising junior David Erdy played his way onto Bethpage Black for last year's PGA Major.

Martin's journey to Pebble Beach began on May 17 in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Maketwah Country Club. The Ohio native (Middletown) carded a 68 in the local qualifier, earning him second place and an advancement to the sectional qualifier.

Sectional qualifying extends to 36 holes (in Columbus, Ohio), where Martin fired rounds of 70 and 67. His 137-stroke total put him in a six-way tie for 11th place. With only 15 players advancing to the US Open, a play-off was needed to eliminate one from the group. PGA Tour regular Rocco Mediate was the unfortunate one, bogeying the third play-off hole to drop out of the six-way tie.

Other notables qualifying from the Columbus sectional included: Stuart Appleby, Ben Curtis, Davis Love III (also in the six-way play-off) and Bo Van Pelt.

Micheel qualified out of Memphis, Tenn., posting back-to-back rounds of 67.

Meanwhile, two current Hoosiers also competed in sectional events. Rising junior Chase Wright and assistant coach Jamie Broce each played in the Springfield, Ohio sectional. Wright earned his spot in Springfield by shooting 73 at Crooked Stick in his local qualifier. Broce finished second at the local qualifier on The Warren Course in Notre Dame, Ind., with a score of 68.

Wright and Broce notched two-round totals of 150 and 142 at the sectional, respectively.
