    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -

Over the next few days, IUHoosiers.com will be taking a look at the IU Men’s Golf team’s top four tournaments scheduled for the 2008-09 campaign. Indiana’s second competition of the fall will be at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational from Sept. 19-21.

“We really built our schedule around four major tournaments with it all starting at Olympia Fields,” said Head Coach Mike Mayer. “We had a lot of success there last year finishing in third against great competition. Jorge (Campillo) played really well in taking second place individually.”

The format has been altered from last season as each team will play both the North and South courses in 2008, rather than just the North. Olympia Fields has been the site of 16 major championships through the years, including the 2003 U.S. Open won by Jim Furyk, who shot an 8-under-par 272 to finish three shots ahead of Stephen Leaney.

“Olympia Fields is an outstanding championship venue and we are very excited to play there once again,” said Mayer.

The course will not be the only thing outstanding at the invitational, however, as the 15-team field is loaded with top-notch programs from across the country. Eight of the 15 squads competing advanced to the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., back in May, including three of the top four finishers in NCAA Champion UCLA, runner-up Stanford and fourth-place Oklahoma State. Other NCAA Championship-qualifying teams will include Charlotte (T-8th), Arizona State and Illinois (T-17th), Texas (19th) and the Hoosiers (21st).

In addition to the Fighting Illini, Indiana will also see Big Ten foes Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue at Olympia Fields. The remaining field includes: Central Florida, Duke, Florida State and Vanderbilt.

Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com in the near future for additional previews of IU Men’s Golf major tournaments in 2008-09.
