July 29, 2004
Benton Harbor, Mich. - Indiana men's golfers Heath Peters, Jeff Overton and Brad Marek advanced to the final two rounds at the 102nd Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf & Country Club. The Hoosier trio will play 36 holes on Friday with a chance to participate in match play over the weekend.
The top 50 players automatically qualified for the final two rounds, and Peters led the group, sitting in a tie for 29th after a two-round, 1-over-par 141 total. Following an even-par 70 in the opening round, the Garrett, Ind., native carded a 71 in round two.
Overton and Marek are tied for 39th with seven other golfers at 142. Overton, a second team All-American, fired a 74 after opening with a 2-under-par 68.
On the heels of a 4-under 66, Marek came back to the field with a 76, still good enough to compete on the final day of stroke play.
Nathan Smith of Soquel, Calif., leads the field at 6-under-par (68-66), one shot ahead of former California star Peter Tomasulo ('04).
The low 16 players following tomorrow's rounds will advance to match play on Saturday. The semifinals will be held Sunday morning, with the championship match set for Sunday afternoon.
