Marek One Shot Back at Western Amateur
July 29, 2004
Benton Harbor, Mich. - Indiana men's junior golfer Brad Marek fired a 4-under-par 66 in the first round of the 102nd Western Amateur at Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club. Marek trails Minnesota sophomore Bronson La CaCassie and former Kansas standout Tyler Hall ('04) by one shot.
In addition to Marek, teammates Jeff Overton and Heath Peters are in contention. Overton sits in a logjam in eighth place following a 2-under 68, and Heath Peters is tied for 31st with an even-par 71.
After opening his day with a pair of bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, Marek secured birdies at the par-4, 12th and 15th before going on a birdie birrage. At 18, the Arlington Heights, Ill, native began a stretch of four birdies in five holes to get to 4-under.
Marek recorded pars on the final five holes to get in the clubhouse with an opening-round 66.
Overton opened his round on the backside and garnered three birdies, including two at par 3's (11 and 17), to get to 3-under entering his second nine.
The second team All-America selection gave the three strokes back with three bogeys on the next seven holes. However, Overton responded with a pair of birdies to close out his round and move to 2-under.
Peters concluded an up-and-down round that saw him garner four birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey. The double bogey at No. 16 put the Garrett, Ind., native at 2-over-par heading into his final nine holes.
He started strong on the frontside with birdies at the par-4, first and third holes en route to his even-par round.
The Hoosier trio returns to the links for the second round of the Championship on Thursday. After Thursday's second round, the 156-player field will be cut to the low 50 scores and ties. The remaining players will play 36 holes on Friday, with the low 16 for the four rounds moving on to match play on Saturday. The semifinals will take place Sunday morning followed by the championship Sunday afternoon.
In other Hoosier golf news, sophomore David Butwell was eliminated in the third round of match play at the English Amateur. The Southampton, England, native advanced to the final 16 before losing to Mark Thistleton on the 19th hole.
