Men's Golf Announces 2014-15 Schedule
July 29, 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer announced the 2014-15 schedule on Tuesday. The slate features five events inside the state of Indiana at some of the top ranked courses nationally.
"Our schedule this year is very exciting," Mayer said as he prepares to enter his 17th season as the IU men's golf head coach. "We compete against some of the top teams in the country, year in and year out and this season will certainly be no exception. We know this is going to be one of the best schedules in the country and our guys are ready to get out there and compete."
For the fourth consecutive season, the Hoosiers will open the season (Sept. 5-7) at the Northern Intercollegiate, hosted by Northern Illinois at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. In 2012, Indiana won the tournament and tied for third in 2011.
The following weekend (Sept. 12-14), Indiana will be at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at the prestigious Olympia Fields CC in Chicago. The field is annually one of the best in the country and this season will be no different with defending national champion Alabama expected to be there along with other top teams.
Indiana returns `home' to host the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind. The Hoosiers have hosted this tournament since 2006 and have regularly finished inside the top five, including a fifth place finish last year.
The fall portion of the schedule continues in October with the Sagamore Preview at Sagamore GC in Noblesville, Ind., on Oct. 13-14 followed by the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational at Lake Nona GC in Orlanda. The Sagamore GC will be a NCAA Regional host site for the NCAA Tournament during the 2015-16 season so it will provide the Hoosiers with a chance to play a potential postseason course a year in advance.
Rounding out the fall schedule will be the Rocket Individual Invitational, where selected players will compete only for an individual title and no team scores will be kept.
To begin the Spring semester, Indiana will join the 13 other Big Ten Conference teams at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Fla., that takes place Feb. 15-16. Then in March, IU returns to the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla., an event the Hoosiers competed in during the 2013-14 season.
As the calendar turns to April, the Hoosiers will be competing each of the four weekends in the month. Things get started at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., on April 3-5.
Then it will be three straight events inside the state of Indiana starting with the NYX Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course on April 11-12. After the Boilermaker Intercollegiate on April 18-19 at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, the Big Ten Championships will be played at Victoria National GC in Newburgh, Ind., near Evansville.
