BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The sun was out and both the temperature and the spirits were high as the Indiana University men's golf team officially began practice today. "Labor Day" was just that as Hoosier head coach Mike Mayer and his squad were ready for work and optimistic about this season.

"We enter this season with more confidence than we ended with last year, which is key," Mayer noted. A level of confidence which is almost scary, given that the Hoosiers stormed to the front of the Big Ten last year at the conference championship. The three years prior to last season, the Hoosiers hadn't finished better than ninth, but IU was in the top-three for the majority of the tournament, before falling to sixth after a disappointing final round.

"We were so young last year (IU started three freshmen and two juniors), but we continued to get better in each spring tournament," said Mayer, who is now in his fifth year at the helm of the Hoosiers.

Fueling Indiana's confidence high is that fact that IU returns all starters to the team, with an impressive newcomer class to boot. Freshmen Scott Seibert and Brad Marek both bring national tournament experience to the Hoosier team, adding to the Hoosiers' "fountain of youth."

Mayer continues to look to the underclassmen to post the low numbers, but he notes that it is this year's senior class that he will count on.

"This year is so important to have that senior leadership," Mayer said. "We have a team that has the chemistry but more importantly, has the talent to win the Big Ten and advance to NCAAs."

The Hoosiers open the season this Friday in Madison, Wis. at the Badger Invitational. Indiana struggled in the event last year, finishing last in a field of 15 teams, but that doesn't worry senior Ben Davidson.

"We obviously didn't play the way we wanted to last year," Davidson said. "I think this year will be a completely different story. We're focused and as confident as I have seen us. Plain and simple, we're looking to win."
