Hoosiers Ranked #18 in Preseason Poll, Campillo Preseason All-American
Sept. 8, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's golf team begins the 2008-09 campaign ranked #18 nationally in the Golfweek preseason top-30 rankings. IU senior Jorge Campillo was also recognized by Golfweek, ranking him as the seventh best player in the country.
Indiana is coming off a 21st place finish at last season's NCAA Championship. In their first trip to the NCAA Championship since 1996, the Cream and Crimson shot a three-round score of 920. Individually, Jorge Campillo put together one of the greatest showings in Hoosier history. Campillo tied for second place at the `08 NCAA Championship after carding a 289 (75-70-72-72). Campillo's impressive resume earned him first team All-America honors. He became the first Hoosier named to the All-America team since Jeff Overton in 2005.
What Golfweek is saying about Campillo:
Credentials: First-team All-American after a T-2 at NCAA Championship, T-5 at Central Regional and victory at Big Ten Championship; won 2008 Spanish Amateur; quarterfinalist at British Amateur.
Notable: He is consistent and in control of his game at all times. He is straight off the tee and has a solid iron game. His short game is his strength and the reason he is able to keep himself in contention.
Coach Mike Mayer says: "Jorge is the type of player who won't necessarily overwhelm you when you watch him play. But in the end, you'll look at his score and say `Wow.' He's not flashy, but he knows how to get the job done."
