Coming off a 15-stroke victory last weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, the Indiana Men's Golf team will host the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind., this Saturday (36 holes) and Sunday (18 holes).
This will be the sixth year for the event, which started in 2006 but was not held last year. The last time the tournament was played, in 2010, the Hoosiers came away with tied for fifth place as a team. Illinois is the two-time defending champion of this tournament and will be in the field once again this weekend.
There will NOT be live scoring this weekend, however the results will be posted at the end of the day on GolfStat.com. Upon the completion of Round 1, the scores will be posted on the Men's Golf page at IUHoosiers.com as well as on Twitter (@IUMensGolf).
The 14-team field this weekend includes two-time defending champion Illinois. Joining Indiana and Illinois this week will be Texas Tech, Kentucky, Ohio State, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin, IUPUI, Northern Illinois, Michigan State, Akron, Miami (OH), Butler and IPFW.
In addition to the 14 teams, there will also be 11 individuals playing to make up the 81-player field.
The Wolf Run Golf Club has been the host site for this tournament since its inception in 2006. The tournament was held for five straight seasons before taking a hiatus during the 2011 season. The course was also a Regional site for the 2011 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, where the Hoosiers played and finished eighth out of 14 teams.
The course is a Par 71 (35-36) layout with a total distance of 7,195 yards.
LAST TIME AT THIS EVENT
In 2010, the Hoosiers used a final round of 286 to move up into a tie for fifth place with Northwestern. Illinois shot rounds of 290-288-281 to run away with the team title by 19 strokes.
Brant Peaper and David Mills are the only two members of the team that have played on this course in the tournament. Peaper led the Hoosiers over the three rounds in 2010 with a total score of 218 (T9) while Mills was just two shots behind at 220 (13).
LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Hoosiers took to the course, they came away champions of the Northern Intercollegiate, shooting a three-round total of 888 (308-291-289) to win by 15 strokes. Leading the charge individually was senior Michael McGee, who finished tied for second overall with a six-over par total of 219. Brant Peaper tied for fourth at seven-over par (217). David Mills was 19th at 15-over par while Hugo Menendez and Corey Ziedonis were part of a group tied for 20th at 16-over par.
Sean Stone, a freshman competing in his first collegiate tournament, finished at 12-over par (225), which was good for a tie for 13th overall.
WIN #25 FOR COACH MAYER
Head Coach Mike Mayer earned his 25th tournament victory with the Hoosiers at the Northern Intercollegiate. He has guided Indiana to at least two tournament victories in each of the last seven seasons.
