Lineup Set for Gopher Invitational
Sept. 15, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Heading into one of the stronger tournaments of the season, Indiana head coach Mike Mayer announced his lineup for the Gopher Invitational. Minnesota will host the event on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 17-18, at Spring Hill Golf Club in Minneapolis.
"We're making some changes in the lineup and bringing in some senior leadership and stability," Mayer said. "For this particular tournament, I really like the lineup we are sending."
Making his collegiate debut, Campillo led the Hoosiers with a tie for 15th at the NCAA Central Regional Preview (Sept. 12-13). Campillo shot a 218 (75-71-72) at the event, and his finish marked the best for a freshman playing in his first event since Ryan Cassidy tied for sixth place at the 2000 Legends Intercollegiate.
"Jorge is going to be No. 1 in our lineup," Mayer said. "He will rise to the challenge and embrace the position. Jorge is going to be quite a player."
Marek will make his season debut in Minneapolis. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native is coming off a spectacular summer in which he captured medalist honors at the Illinois State Amateur, the Joliet Amateur and the North Shore Amateur. Marek also tied for 22nd during stroke play and advanced to the quarterfinals of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.
"Brad did not see action the first tournament and will follow Jorge in the second position," Mayer said. "Brad should be our No. 1 or 2 player. This is the position he belongs in."
At the NCAA preview, Quirarte turned in the lowest round of any Hoosier at the event, firing a 1-under 70 in round three to move into a share of 32nd. The Queretaro, Mexico, native concluded the tournament with a 223 (76-77-70).
"Santiago is playing in the third spot," Mayer said. He came back at the NCAA Central Regional Preview with a great final round, one of the better rounds of the day, and should help us at this tournament."
Also making his collegiate debut, Allenspach collected a tie for 22nd after rounds of 73, 71 and 76 in the Hoosiers' season opener.
"Drew will play No. 4," Mayer said. "He finished 22nd at the NCAA preview. He had a fine tournament, except for a few holes during the final round. He's a special player."
In addition to Marek, Seibert will make his season debut. Seibert emerged as a prominent member of the lineup during the spring season in 2005. On the season, he corralled a 74.90 scoring average in 29 rounds and was in the lineup at the NCAA East Regional.
"In the final spot is Scott Seibert," Mayer said. "Scott finished sixth for us at last year's Big Ten Championships. He is a veteran and experienced player."
