On the Range with Brandon Pike
Sept. 19, 2005
Freshman Brandon Pike is getting his first nod in the starting lineup when the Indiana men's golf team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 24-25). The LaFontaine, Ind., native attended Huntington North High School and is the fourth freshman to find his way into the Hoosier lineup this season (Drew Allenspach, Seth Brandon and Jorge Campillo).
Pike sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to discuss his thoughts on making his collegiate debut, his time in Bloomington and other important topics.
I chose IU because I figured I could come in here, play in some tournaments and get some good college experience. I also came here because it has a great business school and accounting program, and that is what I wanted to go into. Basically, IU had the entire package - a great business school, a quality golf team and two good coaches.
It's a lot of fun. I've had a good time. They say your college times are the best times of your life, and I'm sure getting it off to a good start.
We're beginning to gel. Hopefully, we can find the right guys to put in the lineup, so we can start making more progress and win some golf tournaments.
I'm really excited (to play in his first collegiate event). My parents are going to come watch me in Ann Arbor, which is only three hours from my house. I just want to go out there and play well. I've played in state amateurs and state opens, but this is going to be a whole new experience. I just have to go out there and play golf like it's made to be played.
The practice facility will make you better. It's in really great shape and something all of our team can benefit from. It is a very good facility, very well manicured and can only make you a better player.
Phil Mickelson is my favorite golfer because he overcame adversity by not winning a major for so long and finally winning one to show everyone he could do it. Now he has another one, and the sky is the limit for him.
My biggest influence is my father. He came from a hard family and brought my sister and I up the right way and made us what we are. I really look up to him. He did a lot for me, and I owe a lot to him.
The toughest golf course I have ever played is Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The creator of the golf course actually created the stock market ticker. It is a very nice and well-manicured golf course.
My biggest thrill has to be going to this tournament (the Wolverine Intercollegiate). This is what I came here to do. I came to go out and play. I didn't come here to sit out and watch the other guys leave on the weekend. Now that I'm getting my opportunity, I'm going to make the most out of it.
The U.S. Open is my favorite major because it is always played on the toughest golf course and has the highest scoring average. It is always a good test for the professionals..
