St. Paul, Minn. - The IU men's golf team rounded out the Northern Intercollegiate in much the same dismal way it started. The team failed to improve their standing and finished the second day the same as the first, ninth place.
IU posted a three round total of 874, 52 strokes off the tournament medalist and host Minnesota. The only Big Ten team the Hoosiers placed ahead was Iowa (10 - 877).
The top Hoosiers was again Steve Wheatcroft. After finishing the first day in a tie for 21st, Wheatcroft shot 72 to end up tied for 26th.
On the positive side, all five Hoosiers turned in rounds under 75 to card IU's lowest round of the tournament, 288. John Barry fired a 71, Wheatcroft, Corey Sullivan and Brent Landry each shot 72, and Joe Drozda turned in a 73
In the final tournament standings, Bill Thompson of Minnesota held of Matt Abbott of Penn State. Thompson, having the luxury of playing on his home course, finished an amazing 12 strokes under par.
The Hoosiers will next play at the Legends Invitational, October 5-6, in Franklin, Indiana.
