Bloomington, Ind. - At the first-annual Hoosier Invitational, the Indiana men's golf team is leading the field by 17 strokes after two rounds with a 556 (273-283). Indiana's two round total of 556 sets a new Indiana record for low two round totals. The previous mark was set at the 2000 Legends Intercollegiate at 557.

Head coach Mike Mayer was pleased with the performance of all the Indiana players competing in the tournament.

"We got off to the kind of start you dream about," Mayer said. "Overton birdied seven of his first nine holes to shoot 29 on the front, and that kind of start becomes contagious. The other players just can sense it, and that was a big part of how we started off today. A lot of people contributed today, and that's what it takes."

Junior Jeff Overton continued his excellent play on the IU course as he shot a 134 (65-69) to lead the tournament by three strokes. Overton's first round 65 ties an Indiana record for low rounds and sets a new career low 18. Overton joins four other Hoosiers with low round 65's. His two round total 134 breaks the Indiana record, which was set by Brent Landry in the 1998 Xavier Intercollegiate. He also set a new career low 36 mark. Overton came into the weekend after capturing his first collegiate individual title at the Northern Intercollegiate last weekend.

"It was a lot of fun to play on the home course," Overton said. "The golf course is in great shape and the greens are excellent. Everyone went out there today and had fun. I'm confident going into the final round. I know this course well. But, you can't take anything for granted. We just go in and take care of business tomorrow."

Senior Mike Birkenfeld is in a tie for third after a 139 (71-68). Senior Ryan Cassidy set a new career low 18 as he shot a 68 in the first round, and a new career low 36 as he finished the day with a 142 to be in a tie for eighth.

"Ryan had a big round 68, and as the conditions worsen in the afternoon, Mike stepped up to shoot a 68 for us" Mayer said.

Junior Heath Peters tied his career low 36 mark at 142 after rounds of 69-73 to finish in a tie for eighth.

Sophomores Oren Hodak and Aaron Walters and freshman Tad Sacheck made their Hoosier debuts with a two round 146 (73-73) in a tie for 15th, 147 (71-76) tied for 23rd and 153 (75-78) tied for 59th respectively. Freshman David Butwell is tied for 15th after a 146 (72-74).

Indiana has two teams competing in the tournament. The IU Cream finished the first two rounds with a 595 (294-301) to finish in 11th-place.

"Even with a 17-shot lead, I have challenged these guys to come out tomorrow and increase that lead, to come out and be just as aggressive as they were today."

The final round will begin with a shotgun shot at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning at the IU Golf Course.
