The Indiana Men's Golf team will compete in the prestigious Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational this week, joining 13 other elite teams from across the country in one of the strongest tournaments of the year.
The tournament will be played at Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago and feature 18 holes each of the three days of the tournament. Six teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 25 are in the field this week.
The last time out at the Windon Memorial in Skokie, Ill., Indiana finished in seventh place out of 15 teams. Individually, Hugo Menendez was the top performer for the Hoosiers, collecting a third place finish, the best finish of his career.
The 14-team field this week will include six teams ranked in this week's Golfstat Top 25 - SMU (2), Florida (4), Northwestern (13), Illinois (18), Clemson (19) and Indiana (25). The rest of the field includes Arkansas, Auburn, Augusta State, Duke, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Stanford.
LAST TIME AT THIS EVENT
Last year at this event, played on the North Course, Indiana placed 12th out of 15 teams with a three-round score of 892 (+52). Stanford won the tournament by 16 strokes over second place teams Auburn and Oklahoma State.
Individually for the Hoosiers, Chase Wright led the way with a tie for 25th with a score of 220. David Mills was next in a tie for 36th at 223 while David Erdy followed with 224 in a tie for 41st. Corey Ziedonis checked in at T53 with 226 and Brant Peaper's 234 put him in a tie for 71st.
LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Hoosiers took to the course, they brought home a seventh place finish from the Windon Memorial at the Skokie Country Club. Hugo Menendez fired a 3-over par 216 to place third individually, the best tournament finish of his career.
Corey Ziedonis registered his third top-20 finish in three tournaments this season with a T17 finish at Windon. Peaper also continued to play well with a T23rd finish, his third top-25 finish on the year.
TAKING THEIR TURN AT THE TOP
Over the first three tournaments of the season, three different players have racked up top five finishes. Michael McGee placed second and Brant Peaper was T4 at the season opening Northern Intercollegiate. Then the next week at Wolf Run, Peaper stole the show with a seven-stroke individual victory, matching the tournament record at 11-under par. And then Menendez came through with his third place finish last week at the Windon Memorial.
HOOSIERS IN THE TOP 25
The first weekly rankings from Golfstat were released this week and Indiana came in at No. 25 after finishing last season at No. 33. Indiana helped their cause by winning the Northern Intercollegiate by 15 strokes and finishes second to Illinois by just three strokes at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
ZIEDONIS AND PEAPER EYES THE TOP 25
Dating back to the last two tournaments of the 2011-12 season, Peaper and Ziedonis have finished in the top 25 in each of his last five tournaments.
April 27-29, 2012: Big Ten Championships (Peaper - T21, Ziedonis - T25)
April 17-19, 2012: NCAA Greensboro Regional (Peaper - T23, Ziedonis - T23)
Sept. 8-9, 2012: Northern Intercollegiate (Peaper - T4, Zidonis - T20)
Sept. 15-16: Wolf Run Intercollegiate (Peaper - 1, Ziedonis - T8)
Sept. 23-24: Windon Memorial (Peaper - T23, Ziedonis - T17)
