October 4, 1999 MEN'S GOLF IN 8TH AFTER FIRST DAY
Franklin, Ind. - The Indiana University men's golf team traveled to Franklin, Ind. on Monday to compete in the Legends Intercollegiate golf tournament. After the first day of competition, the Hoosiers share a tie for eight place with Eastern Kentucky. The field of sixteen is led by Louisville who shot rounds of 298 and 291 for a 589 total, one shot ahead of second place Notre Dame (590).
Two freshmen led the Hoosiers on Monday, Drew Meyer (72-75) and Brett Hardin (72-75) shot a pair of 147's in their first rounds of collegiate golf to share a tie for 12th. Junior Steve Wheatcroft fired a strong 71 in his second round on Monday after shooting a first round of 80, he sits in a tie for twenty-seventh heading into Tuesday.
Coach Mike Mayer was optimistic after Indiana's first day at the Legends. "We should be in pretty good shape heading into Tuesday. We changed the lineup after the Northern and it seems to of paid off," Mayer said. "I was pleased with what I saw but we will have to have a good round tomorrow to be in contention."
