MEN'S GOLF TEAM SEARCHING FOR LEADERSHIP AT XAVIER
October 9, 1998 MEN'S GOLF TEAM SEARCHING FOR LEADERSHIP AT XAVIER
Tournament Data: Monday and Tuesday October 13 and 14, the Indiana University men's golf team will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to participate in the Xavier Invitational. The tournament will be 54 holes of stroke play, with 36 holes to be played Monday and 18 holes being played Tuesday. Each team will count their four best scores.
The Teams: (15) Akron, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Morehead.
The Hoosiers: Last week IU played in the Legends Intercollegiate in Franklin, Indiana. The Hoosiers finished third, behind Toledo and Illinois. Senior Brent Landry finished sixth, just five strokes back of the winner.
Coach Mike Mayer is looking to shake things up this week. He has allowed only three of the five starters an exemption for the Xavier Invitational. Brent Landry, John Barry and Steve Wheatcroft do not have to qualify, while Corey Sullivan, Chick Linski, and Rich Thomas will all be battling for the last two spots.
Mayer is expecting a continuation of what he saw at the Legends, and is still looking for someone to step up and be the team leader. "I'm expecting them to keep improving and play better," he said. "Hopefully Landry will step forward and lead this team like a senior should."
