October 12, 1998 IU MEN'S GOLF TEAM TAKES LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY LANDRY CONTINUES STELLAR PLAY
Cincinnati, Ohio, The IU men's is in the lead at the Xavier Provident Invitational after 36 holes on the first day of competition. The Hoosiers (564) fired a first round score of 287, followed by a fantastic 277 to take a three stroke lead over Michigan State (567) and put them at four under par.
Senior Brent Landry (135) continued his outstanding play by turning in rounds of 70 and 65 putting him at seven-under and giving him a two stroke lead over Steve Dixon 137 (73-64), five-under par, of Xavier. Last week at the Legends of Indiana, Landry finished sixth, carding scores of 71-71-73 for a total of 215.
Three other Hoosiers are in the top 20 at Xavier. Rich Thomas (142) 71-71, playing in his first collegiate tournament, Mayer said Thomas came through big for the Hoosiers. John Barry (143) 73-70 is tied for 11th, and Steve Wheatcroft (144) 73-71, has a share of 16th place.
Coach Mike Mayer said he was pleased with both Landry and Thomas and added that his team must now come through in final round. "Landry had an all-around solid performance, he carried the team," Mayer said. " We're in a position to win and we now need to go out and do it."
