MASON, Ohio - For the Indiana University men's golf team, history is on its side when competing at the Xavier Provident Invitational. The Grizzly Tournament Course at the Golf Center at Kings Island has always been a course the Hoosiers have scored very well on.

After day one of the event, the Hoosiers look back and stressed that they just needed a warm-up round before they could continue the scoring pattern on the par 71 6,550-yard layout.

"We started out pretty consistent today, but we just couldn't card the low numbers," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The second round was better for us, and we were actually leading there for the majority of the afternoon, but we struggled finishing. We can't seem to bring in the low scores, but hopefully we'll come out firing tomorrow and contend for the title."

No. 75 Indiana carded a second round of 3-over-par 277 and will enter the final round in fourth place at 580, 12-over-par.

Wright State leads the tournament at 2-over-par 570. Host Xavier is in second at 572, while Eastern Michigan is third with 575.

In 1998, Indiana set the then-tournament record for 18-holes with a 7-under-par 277. The total, which was bettered by one stroke by Western Kentucky last year, helped the Hoosiers to a second-place finish.

In that same year, Brent Landry set the 18-hole Indiana school record with a 6-under 65. Just two years later, the Hoosiers Steve Wheatcroft won medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 209-the third lowest in the history of the tournament.

IU currently stands ahead of the additional three Big Ten schools in the field; No. 76 Iowa is sixth at 586; No. 23 Penn State is tied for seventh at 587; and Michigan is tied for 14th at 597.

Leading the way for Indiana is sophomore Jeff Overton (72-70) and senior Ben Davidson (73-69), who both carded even-par totals of 142, which is tied for seventh. Freshman Scott Seibert is 5-over-par with 147 (74-73), with Heath Peters two strokes behind at 149 (74-75). Senior Aldo Jordan is 9-over-par at 151 (76-75).

Indiana will look to conclude its fall season tomorrow with a win at the Xavier Provident Invitational. The final round will begin with a shotgun-start at 8:30 a.m. EST. Live scoring of the event will be featured on
