    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IU Men's Golf program held a special ceremony Saturday (Nov. 6) morning as long-time IU head coach Bob Fitch (1957-89) was honored with a plaque and planting of a Canadian Sugar Maple tree at the Weather's Golf Team Center.


    A group of Canadian IU Golf alumni got together and decided to recognize Coach Fitch at the new golf facility as he played a major role in each of them coming to Bloomington for their college career. Coach Fitch led the Hoosiers to six Big Ten Championship titles and appeared in the NCAA Tournament 12 times. He led the Cream and Crimson to a sixth place finish at the 1974 NCAA Championships. Coach Fitch's 33-year coaching career included 40 tournament titles for his Hoosiers.

    "It's a wonderful gesture by our Canadian men's golf alumni to honor Coach Fitch in this manner," current Head Coach Mike Mayer said. "The Canadian Maple tree will be a constant reminder of the impact these alumni had on our program. Also the plaque will be a focal point of our program honoring a coach who's accomplishments will never be duplicated."

    Representing the Canadian alumni at the ceremony were:

    Wayne McDonald - a 2010 IU Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee ... two-time First Team All-American ... placed second in the 1969 NCAA Championship ... played on the Champions Tour.

    Gar Hamilton - played on the IU golf team from 1970-72, posting a career scoring averaged of 76.33 ... played on the PGA Tour in 1980 and has played in numerous Canadian Tour events.

    Paul Williams - played for the Hoosiers from 1963-66.

    John Mealia - played for IU from 1976-79.

    Also contributing to the ceremony were the following IU men's golf alumni from Canada:

    Bob Borthwick, Willard Cowan, Kelly Roberts, Tim McCutcheon, Ken Trowbridge, Tim McCuthceon, Ken Trowbridge, Rob Jackson, Craig Deardon, Dr. Bill Parker, Mike Mealia, Yves Tremblay, Richard Rousseau, Gary Stickl, Eric Kaufmanis, Robbie Dew, Rob Coward, Remi Bouchard and David Houston.

    Also attending the ceremony were: Janet Kittle, associate athletics director and sport administrator for men's golf; Mike Mayer, head men's golf coach; Dave Hohnke, volunteer assistant men's golf coach; Melissa Nettleton, men's golf administrative assistant; Brent Emerick, IU athletics grounds superintendent; Dr. Jim Topolgus, IU men's golf alumni; Jim Somrak, IU men's golf alumni, George Taliaferro, IU Athletics Hall of Famer.
