IU Men's Golf Reloading for 2010-11
Nov. 13, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Coach Mike Mayer recently added a pair of highly-touted golfers to his arsenal for the 2010-11 season. The state of Indiana's top juniors golfer, David Mills, signed a National Letter of Intent on Friday while Spaniard Hugo Menendez inked a scholarship tender to join the Hoosier golf team.
"I am thrilled to have both of these outstanding young men coming to IU," said Coach Mayer. "We feel like David is the best prospect in Indiana and Hugo is the best from Spain; and it's exciting to have them join the Hoosier family."
Mills will come to IU via Evansville North High School in Evansville, Ind. He is the No. 1-ranked junior golfer in the state and finished as the runner-up at the 2009 IHSAA state golf championship. Mills is a three-time state finalist and had a high school scoring average of 70.6.
The Evansville North High Hall of Fame inductee has also flashed his skills in juniors tournaments throughout his career. Mills is a 57-time junior golf tournament champion since 2001. He has also tallied 43 runner-up and 180 top-10 finishes in that time frame.
His off-the-course accolades are just as impressive as his on-the-course successes. Mills owns a 4.0 GPA and was named to the AJGA HP Scholastics Junior All-American Team.
Menendez, meanwhile, is set to enroll in classes for the spring semester, but is not expected to compete until the start of the 2010-11 campaign. Menendez is a native of Spain and brings an impressive international resume to Bloomington, including a title at the 2009 Spanish Absolute Championship while playing pairs with Emilio Cuartero.
Additional top-five finishes for Menendez in '09 include: 5th at the Spanish National Amateur, 2nd at the Spanish National 18-U Championship and 4th in the European Boys Team Championship.
He twice won the Spanish National Championship for his age group, grabbing the title in 2003 (U-12) and 2005 (U-14).
