Nov. 17, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana men's golf standouts Jeff Overton (2002-05), Dan Olsen (1986-89) and Steve Wheatcroft (1998-01) each are participating in the second stage of qualifying at Q-School, the PGA Tour's National Qualifying Tournament. The trio each shot even par or lower at their respective playing sites and reside in the top 20, putting themselves in position to advance to the final stage.
Playing at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, Calif., Overton fired a 1-under-par 71 in the first of four rounds on Wednesday afternoon. Overton sits in a tie for ninth place with the top 19 plus ties advancing to the final stage. Steve Schneiter posted the low score of the opening round at 5-under 67.
Olsen shares 10th place after the opening 18 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. A 2004 PGA Tour member, Olsen carded an even-par 72 en route to attempting to regain his playing card. Jay Don Blake, Alex Rodger and Dennis Paulson sit atop the leaderboard with 2-under 70s. As is the case at the Seaside site, the top 19 plus ties move on to the final stage.
Wheatcroft netted the low score out of the trio with a 3-under-par 69, but he sits in a tie for 19th place at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla. Brad Klapprott leads the field after compiling a 7-uner-par 65. At Lake Jovita, the top 18 scores plus ties advance to the final stage.
If any or each of the three advance, the final stage of qualifying will take place on Wednesday-Monday, Nov. 30-Dec. 5 at Panther Lake Course and Crooked Cat Course in Winter Garden, Fla.
In addition to the aforementioned trio, former Hoosier Randy Leen (1995-98) participated at the second stage qualifier on Nov. 9-12. Playing Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla., Leen finished in a tie for 29th at 290 (72-77-70-71).
